ISEE calculation FAQs

What is the ISEE and what is it for?

Your ISEE shows your household’s financial situation.

You need it to apply for or receive various benefits, grants and social services, including family support, university and school meals.

Who needs an ISEE?

Not everyone needs an ISEE.

It is mainly for people applying for benefits, financial support or social services based on their household finances.

You may need it for:

  • Universal Child Benefit
  • Family benefits and financial support
  • University fees and scholarships
  • School meals and nursery care
  • Discounts on some public services

Each benefit may have different eligibility rules, so it’s important to keep your ISEE up to date.

What documents do I need for an ISEE?

The documents you need depend on your household’s circumstances, but generally include:

  • ID and tax code for each member of your household
  • Documents showing your income
  • Balances and average balances for bank accounts, cards and other financial holdings
  • Details of any homes, land or other property
  • Details of any mortgages
  • Registration numbers for any cars, motorcycles or other vehicles you own

You may need to provide additional documents in some cases.

Etnopoint helps you find out which documents you need.

How long is an ISEE valid?

Your ISEE is valid until 31 December of the year you submit it.

To keep receiving benefits and discounts the following year, you need to submit a new, up-to-date ISEE.

We recommend renewing it in good time, especially if you use it to claim the Single Allowance, university support or other financial help.

What’s the difference between standard and current ISEE?

The standard ISEE reflects your household’s financial situation based on the income and assets specified by law.

You may be able to request a current ISEE if your financial situation has changed significantly, for example, because you lost your job or your income fell substantially.

This gives you an ISEE that better reflects your household’s current finances.

What is the DSU, and why do you need it for your ISEE?

The DSU (Single Substitute Declaration) records details of your household, income and assets.

INPS uses it to calculate your ISEE.

In short, you cannot get an ISEE without a DSU.

Which year’s income and assets count towards the ISEE?

The ISEE generally uses income and assets from two years before the year you submit the DSU.

For example, an ISEE submitted in 2026 would normally use figures from 2024.

If your finances have changed significantly, you may be able to apply for an updated ISEE.

What if my household changes?

If your household changes, for example through marriage, separation, the birth of a child or a change of residence, you may need to update the details used for your ISEE.

Who is in your household matters: it can affect your ISEE value and the benefits you qualify for.

Etnopoint can help you work out which household details you need to declare.

Do I need to declare bank accounts or property I own abroad?

Yes. Your ISEE must also include any bank accounts, savings, homes or other assets you hold abroad, in line with the applicable rules.

This matters especially if you still have property or savings in your home country.

Etnopoint can help you find out which documents from abroad you need for your situation.

How long does it take to get an ISEE?

After you submit your DSU, INPS usually calculates your ISEE within a few days.

It may take longer if information is missing, there are discrepancies or checks are needed.

Etnopoint helps you get your documents right, so you can avoid unnecessary delays.
