Residence permit vs EU long-term residence permit
Both a residence permit and an EU long-term residence permit let foreign nationals live legally in Italy, but they have different requirements and conditions. Knowing the difference helps you prepare the right application.
What is a residence permit?
A residence permit allows a non-EU citizen to stay in Italy for a specific reason, such as work, family or study.
It is valid for a limited period, depending on the type of permit and the holder’s circumstances. When it expires, you must apply to renew it if you still meet the requirements.
What is a “residence card”?
“Residence card” is often used to refer to the EU long-term residence permit.
This permit grants permanent residence status. The physical card is valid for 10 years for adults and five years for minors and must be renewed when it expires. The status can still be revoked in the circumstances set out by law.
What are the main requirements?
To apply for an EU long-term residence permit, you generally need to:
Have lived in Italy legally for at least five years, meeting the rules on continuous residence and time spent outside Italy.
Hold a permit that makes you eligible to apply.
Show that you have sufficient income, at least equal to the annual social allowance for an individual application.
Meet any other legal requirements.
If your application includes family members, you must show sufficient household income and, where required, suitable accommodation. Living in Italy for five years does not automatically qualify you for the permit.
Do you need an A2 Italian test?
As a rule, you must demonstrate at least A2-level Italian.
Not everyone needs to take the test: qualifications or certificates recognised by law may be accepted instead. Exemptions also apply, for example, to children under 14, people with international protection and those with certain certified conditions that limit their ability to learn a language.
Please note: there are different types of residence card
A residence card for a family member of an EU citizen is different from an EU long-term residence permit.
Before you start your application, make sure you know which permit is right for your circumstances.
